Phosphorus limitations

Soil phosphorus availability is often low -  affecting plant functioning in a wide range of ecosystems with far reaching implications for the carbon cycle and climate (Goll et al. 2012).

A focus of my work is the assessment of ecosystem responses to man-made changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration, climate and aerosols (e.g. Wang et al. 2017Fleischer et al. 2019, Wang et al. 2020). Further, I am investigating the associated feedbacks between land biosphere and the climate system which control the pace of man-made climate change (e.g. Goll et al. 2014Goll et al. 2017).

Management solutions

Phosphorus rocks are the basis of conventional fertilizer, but are a limited and unevenly distributed resource. The demand of fertilizers is expected to increase in order to fight hunger and climate change (Li et al 2021).

Alternative resources and solutions for improving soil fertility are being explored for transitions towards sustainable resource use.  A focus of my work is the use of soil management measures, alone and in combination with other land uses, for sustainable biomass production and greenhouse gas removal (e.g. de Oliveira Garcia et al. 2020, Goll et al. 2021).
